Sadly, it does. I think for foreigners, depicting medieval europe as it looks in contemporary depictions is just natural, and it is the best approach. For western media it seems to be impossible to emancipate from the grimdark, cruel optic that just was in fashion for a while. As a reenactor, I sometimes get asked if my clothes are not a little too clean, too colorful, if my gear shouldnt be rusty, dented and worn down. People just cant imagine that people were able to dye cloth, wash themselves and take care of their precious gear. For whatever reason, none of these people have trouble imagining the old greeks, romans, the people of the renaissance and basically every non-european culture as colorful and well-groomed.
