It's a very Special day today, 50 years ago on this day the Governor General of Australia dismissed the Prime Minister of Australia. I didn't have a relevant image so I asked Gemini to make a picture for me and it came up with this.

>>21909 > the Governor General of Australia dismissed the Prime Minister of Australia. What exactly does that mean? What were the consequences?
>>21916 The Governor General has the power to hold elections and dismiss the Prime minister but it's something they rarely ever do but in 1875 Gough Whitlam's government was being blocked in the senate(the upper house) which was leading to a situation where supply might be blocked which for countries other than the USA isn't acceptable, so the Governor General dismissed the Prime Minister and held a new Election.
I mean they rarely ever hold elections like this. Technically all elections are called by the governor general.
1975 I meant, Australia didn't even exist in 1875. I need to proof read my posts...
>>21918 So this is a holiday? Like an Independence Day? I thought you celebrated Australia Day in memory of Gallipoli.
>>21922 No, it's just an interesting event. As it is the 11th of the 11th we do celebrate Remembrance day but that isn't a public holiday. Australia day is on January 26th and that is to celebrate the first Fleet arriving but there are people in Australia who don't like it because of that which is stupid. ANZAC day is on April the 25th which was the day the ANZAC corps landed in Gallipoli but ANZAC day is to celebrate ANZACs in general. ANZAC stands for Australia New Zealand Army Corps.
>>21923 In Germany we have unification day on 3rd October. Else I think all our holidays are of a religious nature and sometimes different depending on the region being catholic or protestant.
>>21925 Doesn't Germany have 1st of May? Some Swiss cantons have that and I think it's historical, not religious. Zurich is always burning and I thought that Berlin was the big version of that.
>>21925 We celebrate religious days but different states in Australia have different holidays and celebrate them at different times. South Australia celebrates Adelaide cup day but Victoria has Melbourne cup day, most states celebrate the King's Birthday(not actually on his birthday though) and Labour day but might have them at different dates. Also technically South Australia doesn't celebrate boxing day instead we celebrate Proclamation day on Boxing day.

Ohh and also New Years day is a non-religious public holiday.
>>21930 ??? I don't know who that is meant to be, maybe Howard Holt?? He went for a Swim and never returned.
>>21932 >He went for a Swim and never returned. I didn't know, but it would make this joke instantly 100 times better than it already was.
>In August 1974, the Australian Labor Party Government under Prime Minister Gough Whitlam announced it had recognised the incorporation of the Baltic states into the Soviet Union de jure. Wow, what a shit cunt, should have been given a kick up the bum too
>Procglmation Why can't Austrians spell proper English?
>>22073 It's AI... >>22001 Heh. What a mad lad.
>relevant image Was he a real general?
>>22082 No he was a Barrister and Judge.
