This is a good illustration of the difference. French people are very proud of their language and culture. If you ignore that, you're rightly scorned. But if you attempt to engage with it, they're helpful, because by doing so, you show you respect them.
The German, meanwhile, has no actual pride in his language, and attacks anyone who attempts to speak it based putely on pedantry. He would rather no foreigner spoke German, and that he responded in the language of people that conquered him, than have anyone trigger his linguistic autism.
Conclusion, the Frank is human, the German is a robot who can't handle any deviation from the rules -- much in fact like a Bohemian, the same people who invented the word robot!
