I'm really tempted to get a Mac Mini. Lörs onions on this computer?
On one hand, Apple does produce fine hardware. On the other, MacOS is niggerlicious. Maybe you should give Asahi Linux or OpenBSD a try?
>>19407 >On the other, MacOS is niggerlicious. It's unix based, which is good, and the shitty stuff you can just fix with certain third party programs and such, no?
I do own a Mac mini and I always defended this idea of a mini PC (like with Intel NUC when it was a thing). I in fact shilled for the Mac mini on old KC constantly. But if I was you I would buy it only if you have excess money and for the novelty of the hardware. I have a work laptop and in my personal computer I just watch movies, use Photoshop and very rarely play something. I for example emulated demons souls on my Mac mini, only to then not finish it. Since I don't use my personal computer for nothing important, I don't lose anything by having Mac mini as one.
>>19409 >But if I was you I would buy it only if you have excess money and for the novelty of the hardware. Why? Is it that bad?
The base model is actually great value. Don't get any upgrades though. It'd be cheaper to just get another one a few years down the line than getting the upgrade now.
>>19412 >Don't get any upgrades though Yes, especially the storage upgrades are ridiculous. This is also my main concern, that I'd have to do everything over external hard drives, because 256GB is nothing.
>>19413 Do you have a nice hub for usb c, display port, etc?
>>19414 I do, but so far, I couldn't be arsed to buy the NVMe SSD I was going to install in the docking station. Also, external enclosures (non-docks) are usually even faster.
Great hardware, stupid OS. Would not.
I'm really tempted to get a Fish Mac. Lörs onions on this börger?
I bought the base M4 mini with the edu discount last year. It's great. I play windows games with crossover.. with the way the RAM is integrated 16 gigs still works well since it swaps fast.. I've had retail Wow, arm64 windows 11 guest OS, final cut pro, 50+ browser tabs.. and it all switches back and forth pretty quick.. It's my first mac
It's only worth it if you're an artist of some kind, if you use a computer for anything else, you're better off getting a Windows mini-PC (or doing that then installing Linux on it).
>>19407 >Maybe you should give Asahi Linux Asahi Linux is literally only functional in the barest sense and you can't be productive on it so stop shilling it to retards. MacOS suffers from Apple being a massive greedy corporation but it IS derived from Unix, it IS light years ahead of Windows and out of all mass market OS's it is perhaps the most stable out there. In general if you are a Linux user there isn't really anything you can't do on MacOS, complete with terminal-heavy workflows.
>>19430 >you're better off getting a Windows mini-PC No you're not, anything with Windows is getting corraled into using 11, and mini-pc's are usually underpowered which means your experience with windows on such a machine will be horrendous. Using windows of all things with mini-pc instantly flags you as a retard with very limited technical knowledge.
>>19575 With Linux it might still work, but still I think the Mac is the better deal here. Definitely better than using Asahi for anything other than development of Asahi itself.
>>19576 So in summary if I really want to use the Mac Mini I need a dock, yeah? Which one do you use?
>>19578 I got one from AliExpress. Note that some docks are designed in a way that blocks the wifi antenna of the Mac. I have seen really bad performance with some that put metal below the Mac, my cheaper Ali dock seems to be not too bad in that regard. But wifi definitely is better without it.
Jumped the shark and ordered it, I want to try using it without a dock first. I'm a bit scared of MacOS, it seems to be quite different from Linux and Windows in handling.
>>19413 >because 256GB is nothing Dont say that I had a 256 gb ssd from 2017 to 2023. Never formated, had a picture and video folder with every spotted hyena video and picture the internet has, had x versions of modded WoW vanilla private servers and path of exile garbage on that drive. Didnt manage to make it full in 6 fucking years.
>>20632 Sure (I also used a Thinkpad with 256GB for years), but I like to watch movies and shows in good quality occasionally. Those take up quite a lot of storage.
>>20630 Get iTerm 2, it feels like Linux, but somehow better. Homebrew is bad for a Linux repository but better than anything Windows (sans WSL).
>>20647 I doubt I will spend much time in the terminal, but it's noted. If you know some other tools and programs you consider essentials, feel free to drop them in this thread.
I like it. -Silent -Doesn't emit any heat -Small but powerful
>>20659 Why does yours have an M2 Pro?
>>20662 Because new ones either have M4 or M4 Pro
>>20663 Because it's an older model. Still sufficient for everything I use it for.
>>20651 I'm more of a Linux CLI guy, so most recommendations would be for that. For point and click stuff, most things run in a web browser these days anyway. I use the same Firefox and same addons under Linux, Windows and Mac.
>>20667 Is Firefox slower than Safari?
>>20669 That that I ever noticed. Maybe in some benchmarks, but the bottleneck is my internet connection anyway.
> tempted to get a Mini What about the Gen Z Boss?

It is a very good computer just don't buy one for gaming purposes
>>20698 Well I don’t game, so it’s okay
>>20698 >a very good computer For what, exactly? I get the hardware performance, fine, but what the fuck are you actually using it for? >Work If you're doing anything remotely advanced, your company should have VPN options to better hardware. If you're doing anything less advanced, any machine works fine. Additionally, sooner or later in any fucking job you will come across some stupidity that hard locks you to a Windows solution, whether that be a specific software or security measure. If you're using a PC for home working, this is not a machine to get (graphic design software is also on Windows). >gaming Utterly pointless >hobbyist coding The only interesting strands in hobbyist coding are microcontrollers and AI/ML. The former can be done on anything, the latter needs a graphics card. >browsing da web :) Do I need to say anything here?
>>20770 I don’t think you have ever used a Mac Mini and don’t know what you’re talking about.
>>20819 This emotional, unreasonable response with no argument behind it and no attempt to engage with the positions stated is exactly what I would expect from someone who uses a Mac Mini.
>>20822 Many things of the stuff you said are just plain false, that begs the question why you speak on the matter.
>>20823 >YOU'RE WRONG!!! <where am I wrong? >... You've had many oppurtunities to state why, but you don't -- curious!
>>20825 Here, I'll make it very easy for you -- what is it that you are doing with your Mac Mini that would be impossible or more challenging to do on another machine? And please dont't MacOS software development, faggot.
>>20827 >-- Are you that schizo from Kohl?
>>20831 This is called an em dash. I don't know why you'd associate it with mental illness. Quite the attempt at deflection as well, but sadly doesn't work. We're waiting for your response to >>20827. Or should I say -- we're waiting!
>>20833 That's not an em dash, that's an em dash: — Also, em dashes don't have spaces around them—even though I think it looks ugly.
>>20647 Is there something wrong with the standard MacOS terminal? Also what's bad about Homebrew? I plan on using it.
>>21319 I don't think there's anything wrong, but iTerm 2 is just pretty neat. Also, homebrew is certainly the best on Mac, but if you're used to Linux, then you might find it lacking a bit in maintenance, package availability etc. It's not bad by any means though.
I have checked mini pcs lately like those of minisforum, bmax. U can get like ryzen 6800u with 32 gb ram and 500 gb ssd for 360 Euro. Igpu is as good as a 1050ti, similar to mac mini. Its also silent and power saving af.
I have never in my life used a mac nor an iphone
>>19406 As a daily driver they are completely fine and usually quieter than a full tower. For demanding applications like gaming, graphic or video editing they are inapt. >>19425 Best burger at McDonalds.
>>21333 >graphic or video editing they are inapt I saw a couple of reviews that said it's totally fine for video editing. Well, it's irrelevant for me anyway, but whatever. >>21331 I'm already in the ecosystem, so it's a logical step for me.
What's the point of a Mac when Windows and Linux exist? If you don't know how to use a computer, just make it easy on your wallet and get a chromebook instead.
Bought m4 mini, but it is collecting dust. I still need my gaymen PC and just don't bother using the Mac then. If you are not gaming, I would say go for it. It is quick, silent and low power.
First post from le Mac mini
>>21974 quality has gone way down
>>21984 You never replied to my Belarusian thread :(
Damn I just tried this tool called yap and it created subtitles for a 45 Min video in 12 fucking seconds. And sure they still need some editing, but they're really good. Mac black magic: https://github.com/finnvoor/yap
