What languages is Bernd learning? Talk in them or about them here. I'm focusing on Japanese (B2-B1) and Spanish (B2) now. My method so far is to work through a textbook or short online course for grammar and basic vocabulary, use a pre-made Anki deck for the 5-6k words you need to understand native material without too much effort, then start reading and watching native material. For Japanese practice I recommend the Oishinbo anime. Pleasant viewing, and they use regular everyday Japanese so you won't end up talking like a JoJo character.

Unfathomably based, you got good taste. Sadly I don’t learn any languages (besides Latin, which I haven’t looked into for months), so can’t contribute to the thread.

How many Kanji do you know? And I mean draw from scratch, not just remember from 'remeber the Kanji' tier books?

I also ordered the original soundtrack CD of Oishinbo from the late 1980s from Japan, because on streaming services only the remaster was available.

I can (slowly) read a book in Japanese without a dictionary, but I can only write a few hundred from memory.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqXfLMfQRN8&list=PLoxeiYXcnELwu-fP8ChTWMNZfWKz6zccd&index=1 Playlist of all episodes with English subs on YouTube. They don't have the movies but everything else seems to be there.

Bernd is trying to learn classical Latin. With the goal of reading scientific treaties from Renaissance Europe in their original language in mind. Bernd is currently failing catastrophically at keeping a good learning pace

Not good enough for LLSPI yet I believe. I have « grammaire latine complète » by Lucien Sausy and a Larousse thematic vocabulary book, which I discovered is absolutely terrible (gives incomplete, sometimes nearly fully incorrect translations).

What do you mean not good enough? It’s perfect even for absolute beginners, because it uses lots of familiar words and pictures to illustrate certain things, that you learn Latin by only reading Latin is the point of the book. I use it as a beginner and haven’t had any problems

Also learning Japanese. I've passed the N5 test and got my certificate recently so now I'm an honorary nihonjin :3 With my current workload and other hobbies, my focus is on drilling the Kaishi 1.5k deck and watching anime. Then in a month Genki 2 and supplementary materials in order to prepare for N4 next year. Ideally, I'd like to learn Finnish but I just don't have the time to dedicate myself to it thoroughly now.

Seconding other Bernd, LLSPI is very intuitive but you use whatever works for you.

You should also download Roma Aeterna besides the normal LLPSI textbook. It has reading texts to accompany the chapters of the main textbook.

But doesn’t the uploader explicitly state that one should turn on automatic subtitles, which would imply machine generated ones? Well, whatever, there are like 60 fansubbed episodes already available

When you select the sub track it isn't listed as (automatically generated), which should mean it was provided separately by the uploader. Moreover it does things like list characters' names before they talk, e.g. (Kurita) Yamaoka! How could you say that? (Yamaoka) (yawns) The subs also include accurate descriptions of music and background noise. I've never seen either feature in auto-generated subs.

I just downloaded all of the subs just in case the videos get deleted from YouTube. I also tested them with the BluRay and they seem to fit, so no resynching necessary to use them with torrents. Attached is a zip with all the subs in case anyone else is interested. The zip can also be found here: https://gofile.io/d/9vvxby

In case anyone is interested in Irish: https://doegen.ie/counties This is an online archive of early 20th century recordings of native Irish language speakers. Very unique sound among the world's languages, and quite different from the English-accented Gaelic which has become common nowadays. This is a good site if you want to develop a more pure Gaelic accent, or if you just like hearing the sounds of a vanished world. When these recordings were made, Irish was still a language of daily life and literature in large parts of the island.

It's taking me fucking forever to learn languages. The problem is that if it's not interesting I'll never learn it but there's not much interesting out there.
